This old two storey artisan house near Portobello was limited for space. Although the original house retained it's historic features, it had a poorly built single storey kitchen and bathroom extension which was poorly lit and provided no outdoor space.

The design called for a new L-shaped extension to fill the small rear garden. The extension is two storey along the side boundary and single storey along the rear boundary wall. The leftover space provides a small courtyard which gets great sunlight throughout the day and floods the new extension with natural light.

On the ground floor the new galley kitchen is located along the side boundary with a dining room along the rear wall which is lit from above by a large opaque glass roof light. The 1st floor return contains a new spacious full bathroom with bath and separate shower, all naturally lit with a large opaque glass window and rooflight.
